About Joshua Key
Estate planning and probate attorney serving Alabama families. Direct access to the attorney. No handoffs. No runarounds.
Background
Born and raised in Kansas City, I grew up with a profound appreciation for the simple joys in life: a good barbecue, the thrill of sports, and the art of brewing the perfect cup of coffee. Over a decade ago, I made the move to Alabama, and it has been a welcome shift. I have swapped my winter coat for a fishing rod and fully embraced the local passion for college football. Roll Tide!
I come from a family of entrepreneurs. My grandfather’s grocery and hardware stores were my first introduction to the entrepreneurial spirit. My father’s 38-year career as an airline pilot instilled in me a sense of adventure and a broad perspective on life. Those experiences shaped how I think about planning, responsibility, and what it means to build something that lasts, and they led me naturally into a career in law.
My legal career began at Regional Paramedical Services in Alabama, where I served as in-house counsel covering Medicare and Medicaid compliance, employment law, and corporate governance. It was more than practicing law. It was understanding the pulse of a business and the people behind it. That background makes me a better advisor for Alabama families and business owners today.
Practice Focus
I limit my practice to estate planning and probate law. That specialization matters. Alabama has its own statutes, court procedures, and inheritance rules, and the details change. A plan that worked in 2015 may not work today. I stay current on Alabama law so my clients do not have to.
My work covers the full range of estate planning and probate needs:
- Wills and Revocable Living Trusts: designed to keep families out of probate and in control
- Probate Administration: efficient handling of creditor claims, asset distribution, and court filings
- Medicaid and Elder Law Planning: protecting assets from nursing home costs with Alabama-compliant strategies
- Special Needs Trusts: preserving government benefits while securing your loved one’s financial future
- Trust Administration: guiding trustees through their duties to avoid personal liability and family disputes
- Business Succession: ensuring your business transfers to the right people on the right terms
A Personal Perspective
My commitment to this work goes beyond professional expertise. As the father of a daughter with special needs, I know firsthand that a Special Needs Trust is not just a legal document. It is the plan that determines what your child’s life looks like after you are gone, who manages her care, how funds are distributed, and whether her government benefits remain intact.
That personal connection shapes how I approach every client whose family includes a loved one with a disability or special circumstance. I do not treat these cases as routine, because they are not.
Direct Access. Every Time.
At Key Law, LLC, you work with me directly. I meet with you, review your documents, answer your questions, and handle your case. You will not be handed off to a paralegal or associate for the substantive work. I keep my caseload manageable specifically so that every client receives the attention their family’s future deserves.
When you call Key Law, you reach me. That is not a marketing line. It is how the firm operates.
Education and Credentials
At Avila University, I balanced college baseball with academics, earning a Bachelor of Business Administration. That experience taught me the importance of teamwork and perseverance. I then pursued both a Juris Doctor and a Master of Business Administration at the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Law, completing the dual degree program in three accelerated years instead of the standard four. I earned a place on the National Dean’s List and recognition in Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges.
My Approach
I believe in cutting through the legal jargon to make law accessible and relatable. Key Law, LLC operates on three principles that guide every client relationship.
Plain-Language Advice
Estate planning involves complex legal documents. My job is to make them understandable. I explain every document, every option, and every consequence in plain terms so you can make confident decisions for your family.
Plans Built for Your Family
No two families are alike. Blended families, special needs dependents, business interests, out-of-state assets, these require specific legal structures. I build around your situation, not around a template.
Genuine Accessibility
When you have a question, you reach me directly. I keep my caseload manageable so every client receives the level of attention their plan requires, not after-the-fact corrections.
